RDS Defamation Practice Secures Another Win In The Defamation Suit Against Dato’ Lokman Adam
RDS defamation practice group headed by Senior Partner Datuk DP Naban assisted by associate Joseph Wong Hup Hin secured another win today in a RM50 million defamation suit against former UMNO supreme council member Dato’ Lokman Noor Adam.
On 26.3.2021, RDS issued a letter of demand on behalf of our founding partner Rosli Dahlan against Dato’ Lokman for publishing two defamatory videos containing falsehoods and fabrications that Rosli had unlawfully profited from the 1MDB cases where RDS acted for the government to successfully secure settlements of USD3.5 billion (~RM14 billion) with Goldman Sachs, RM2.83 billion with Ambank and USD80 million (~RM320 million) with Deloitte.
On 5.4.2021, RDS filed a defamation suit against Dato’ Lokman and obtained interim injunction. Lokman deleted the two defamatory videos.
Today, the High Court granted a full injunction preventing Lokman from repeating his defamation against Rosli Dahlan. The Court fixed 1.4.2022 as the trial date to determine the defamation claim for damages of RM50 million.
Earlier on 1.6.2021, directors of anti-corruption watchdog Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4 Center), namely Cynthia Gabriel, Dato’ Hjh Sutinah binti Sutan, Prof. Dr. Edmund Terence Gomez and Azrul Mohd Khalib conceded to RDS’s demand to issue an unconditional and unequivocal public apology to Rosli Dahlan for making similar allegations.
C4 stated that they “truly regret that we have stained the reputation of Lawyer Rosli Dahlan who by all accounts is an honest and a morally upright citizen with a good reputation for being a highly professional and ethical lawyer who strives to maintain a high standard of transparency, integrity and virtue. C4 Center deeply regrets the dishonour that we had caused him, his family and his law firm and we hereby wholeheartedly denounce the said Posts in their entirety. For this C4 Center and its Directors sincerely apologise to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan.”
On 3.5.2020, RDS also successfully secured a public apology from famous blogger Syed Akbar Ali for state-owned oil and gas corporation PETRONAS.
